Habibi (US) + Spill Gold

Subbacultcha presents

sixties rock 'n roll, pop, garagerock

For fans of: Ex Hex, The Vaselines, The Shrangi-Las

Brooklyn-based quintet Habibi formed in the spring of 2011 by Detroit-native Rahill Jamalifard and Lenaya Lynch, who bonded over their love of Middle Eastern psych music. Tapping into their Motown roots of simple but infectious pop melodies delivered with punkish attitude, the two recruited Erin Campbell (guitar/bass) and Karen Isabel (drums), and the band was quick to receive critical accolades, with their self-titled Burger Records debut heralded by The New Yorker as “stunning”.

Spill Gold is a psychedelic three-piece that unwinds vivid, spiralling stories with their eerie yet persistent songs, bringing listeners into a trance-like state. With snake- charming synths, dreamy yet urgent vocals, swerving guitar lines, and heavy, earthquaking drums, they move you to dance and float away at the same time.
